ERIN MACDONALD HOMEROOM TEACHER

As an international educator at schools in Korea, Malawi, China, Kazakhstan, and now here in São Paulo, my experiences have allowed me to appreciate “the wonder and beauty of the world and its people.” I am thrilled to be part of the dynamic team here at GIS. I am a Canadian certified school teacher and proud mother of two wonderful children who I have seen grow into open-minded, creative young people who respect themselves, others and the world around them. As a long standing PYP teacher, my aim has always been to foster these attitudes in the classroom. I have seen first-hand how a PYP community can foster a love of life and learning for all students, parents, and teachers involved. “It takes a village…”

MARK JONES HOMEROOM TEACHER

I was born and raised in a small town called Godalming about one hour south of London. I studied geography at King´s College London before completing a PGCE a few years later. I began my teaching career in central London, where I stayed for four years, before deciding to take my career overseas. Since then I have taught in Brazil, India and Spain and I now have experience of teaching all ages from 5 to 11. I am incredibly excited about returning to São Paulo and to be working at GIS with the PYP curriculum and Reggio approach. The curriculum allows children to learn in a fun, creative and explorative way, and I aim to adopt this in a safe and happy environment where children enjoy coming to school to learn and develop.

TEREZA GRIMALDI atelierista

I am an educator and childhood researcher born and raised in Sao Paulo. I have been around the world experiencing languages, cultures and flavours. I have a degree in Visual Arts, and spent several years  working in museums, such as Casa Modernista and Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo. During this time I had the opportunity to work with children and decided to combine my passions for art, childhood culture and education, and began my career as a teacher. The Reggio Emilia approach meets all my beliefs and expectations regarding education, and I am sure that thinking and acting creatively as a community is the most empowering way of building a society.

KARINA GOMES HOMEROOM TEACHER

After working 10 years in administrative positions I discovered that education is my passion. I have a strong desire to empower children as they develop themselves and experience a meaningful childhood. I have been teaching Early Years for almost 10 years in a constructivist and Reggio Emilia approach. Living abroad has allowed me the opportunity to become bilingual. I have come to realise that I am an enthusiastic educator and life-long learner who is fortunate to live my dream through my profession.

BRUNA CAMPOS HOMEROOM TEACHER

I am a PYP teacher born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. I have been working as a bilingual teacher for 7 years. During my childhood, my passion for books made me feel like I could travel around the world! I learned to know different countries and cultures, just by reading stories and getting in touch with other perspectives. It made me a great “traveler”, and I felt that my passion could become my career. I kept this desire in my soul and, some years later, I received my university degree in Languages, Literature and Education. My aim is to promote global citizenship in an inclusive environment, making all the students feel safe to learn, explore and share their views about the world like I did when I was a child!

VINÍCIUS SOUZA P.E teacher

I am a physical education teacher with a belief in the concept of physical literacy. I was born and raised in São Paulo, and at the age of 20 I went to live abroad to experience the faculty of life. In this four years of living overseas I had the chance to study and get certifications in the fitness area as well as learn from different cultures such as Thai, Turkish, Australian and Chinese. In 2010, I returned to Brazil to get my graduation and on my second year in college (FMU) I started an internship at St. Francis School. I was the first P.E intern in the school history and later on got hired as P.E assistant. 

Nine years later, I  still carry the same energy that drove me to face the unknown. Today, I am also a research member of the Olympic Studies Group (GEO) at USP and I am working on my research project which is based on the relationship between sports, in particular Surfing, and human values. 

I believe that the sport and physical activities may be the environment for humans to develop and resignify their values.

thiago P.E TEACHER - capoeira

Thiago has a full degree in Physical Education by Faculdades Metropolitanas Unidas- UniFMU;  He is specialized in Exercise Physiology by the Federal University of São Paulo - Escola Paulista de Medicina - UNIFESP - EPM; Master in Pedagogy of Motricity, research line: Professional Training and Work Field, at the State University of São Paulo - UNESP..

He is also a member of the Center for Studies and Research in Professional Training in the field of Physical Education - NEPEF - UNESP / RC. He is a lecturer in the Physical Education course at the University of Santo Amaro - UNISA and Faculdade Anhanguera -Taboão da Serra. Moreover, Thiago coordinates a team of Capoeira professionals `Gingando sem Fronteiras`, who are responsible for teaching Capoeira as an extra/ curricular activity at private schools. Thiago has been practising Capoeira since 1998 and has been working with this in schools since 2005. 

“I understand that the practice of Capoeira present in the international environment, tends to become a space that will promote cultural and linguistic diversity, providing an understanding that extends not only the student's linguistic universe but also the way of understanding the world in which they live and their multilingual, cultural, political and social nuances. In this context, we learn Capoeira mainly as a way of interacting with the cultural identity of a person, as well as the physical experience through the multiple approaches that this practice possesses, such as: play, dance,  fight, musicality and ancestry.

LUCIANO VIEIRA MUSIC TEACHER

I was born in Minas Gerais, Brazil. When I was 6 years old I first heard the Beatles which completely turned my world around. This happened one day when I rushed into my grandma's house while my uncle was listening to It Won't Be Long and that was the first time music made sense to me. It made me crazy! I studied classical guitar, and soon I realized I was more interested in Rock'n Roll and changed to electric bass at the age of 11. I studied with fine bassists, such as, Nico Assumpção and Frank Herzberg. 

I graduated in music from UNICAMP, where I had many incredible teachers, such as Cyro Pereira, Ulisses Rocha, Jorge Oscar and Fernando Faro. I played in many groups and recorded several albums. I worked at music schools until I realized my love of teaching and playing for children. I joined Helio Ziskind's group, and found it so exciting to play for children and see how they absorb music and everything related to it. Helio introduced me to Teca Alencar de Brito, a renowned children’s music educator. I started working at her school, Teca Oficina de Música. Working with her and the children was a turning point in my career. 

Currently I teach music at GIS, School of Rock, Aubrick, Concept, Espaço Musical Ricardo Breim, Studio Meyer. I still play with Hélio Ziskind, and with another group that plays rock for children, called Rock Pauleirinha. Aside from music, I love mountain biking through nature and have just returned from a cycling adventure that took me from Germany to Italy. I am so passionate about music and cycling that one of my 6 year old students named me a “musiclista.”
